iPhone 3.0 TMobile

Said my prayer and pushed the upgrade button in iTunes this afternoon, committing to the iphone 3.0 firmware upgrade. As TMobile is my iphone carrier, I live in the murky zone of the unsupported and the untested. I have an unlocked 2G iphone without being jailbroken. The good news is that my virtual unlock is preserved and my phone works. Initially, my wifi seemed dead and nothing loaded into Mobile Safari. Shit… no more online NYT or GMail, life was going to be harsh. But after about 15 minutes, my wifi connection was back (sleepy wifi syndrome) and my appendage (Schimmelism #254) was connected to the world again. The only thing I had to do was re-enter my TMobile setting for the APN number (internet2.voicestream.com, no username, no password; love TMobile’s logins).
Now the bad news about firmware 3.0 upgrade. Most of my 49 apps are broken, including Tweetie. They crash immediately upon launching. I have read online that this means the app was not yet updated for the iphone 3.0 OS. I can’t believe 49 iphone developer forgot about 3.0′s arrival, but a fair amount of iphone users seem to be reporting app crashing, or maybe this problem will require the new ultrasn0w hack, which is supposed to be available tomorrow. Either way, another iPhone firmware update survived but with injuries.

My broken apps problem went away after I went to the Apps Store last night. I had to accept a new Apps Store agreement, once that was completed, all my crashing apps worked again. This issue may have been brought on by the fact that I use my wife’s iTunes account to buy apps. Now just my YouTube app is not connecting on my iphone. I still believe we will see FW 3.0.1 soon.

As of Friday, still couldn’t get YouTube to connect. This seems to be a problem with many folks. An iTunes restore with new phone selected was suggested, but during this process, I lost my unlock, so I had to use the redsn0w process to regain my unlock. Once my phone had the newly installed unlock/jail-break, I was able to use the iTunes restore procedure to get my contacts, and other personal data back on the phone. Now everything works including YouTube and I am at 3.0 with TMobile as the carrier.

ok after reading your other blog about unlocking your wifes 3gs i think i have a much better idea of how things are done so let me know if i have the process pretty much in perspective now…

so i can jailbreak my phone with redsn0w (which i already downloaded just havent used yet) then after jailbreaking my phone i start up cydia and install ultrasn0w which is what unlocks my phone, then it should work on tmobile when i put in my old tmobile sim correct?

  8. Gordon says:

Strider…. that is correct. Don’t forget this step first for 3GS phones: It is suggested that 3GS owners first capture their iBEC and iBSS settings and this is probably the trickiest process of the three steps to unlocking the iPhone 3GS. 9. Strider says:

i just have a 3G not a 3GS do i still need to worry about those things? or do i just dontinue with the other two steps?

  10. Strider says:

ok i think i am all ready to make the switch i just have one last question for you, when i jailbreak and unlock my phone will i lose my contacts and things like that or will my apps still work or will i have to find new ones and reinput data?

  11. Gordon says:

If you have a 3G phone then you can skip the iBEC procedure. When I jailbreak, I lose my apps, but your apps and contacts, etc, are all stored as a backup in iTunes, so you can retrieve them from iTunes.

  12. Big fan of your blog. Just wanted to tell you.
